Taken outside the context of the book, this is a brilliant film, so close to the feeling of the original work. immense scenes of battle and relationships between the characters. gently paced and engaging.

however, taken in context of the book, peter jackson and his screenplay crew mess around with the story too much and in the end lose faith in jrr tolkeins work to such a degree that they mistakenly believe they can improve it.
