Review of The Lord of Ayuthaya (2004) by Stephen Y — 27 Apr 2010
King Textron: "How could you be here? Only men are suppose to do the battle thing.".
Girl: "I have no other way out except following the army.".
King Textron: "Then why do you hang yourself up and commit suicide?".
Girl: "The head of the village here wants me to be his wife. But I don't love him. So I prefer to die from being his wife.".
King Textron: "What about me?" [Note: They just met.].
Girl: "I have crashed on you since I first saw you.".
Stephen will watch anything. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it's just a complete waste of time. This movie was a case of the latter. I was hoping to watch a Thai movie with some "amazing sword-fighting sequences using the traditional Thai art of krabi krabong." I watched and watched and waited the entire movie and never found any! The promo for this movie simply hoodwinked me.
Complete with bad subtitles, this Thai movie dubbed in Mandarin had terrible sound quality, special effects, and awful fight sequences. Perhaps below standards even for a TV drama series. What was billed an action movie, was in fact a movie about a woman attempting to seduce three men. Then perhaps to add some panache to the film, the telling of the story is done similarly to Rashomon, where the same story is told from 3 different perspectives. Still, it did not add value to this film.
This movie is not recommended for rental. Production quality and storyline are just not there. If you're looking for a Pang Brothers quality film, this simply was not it.
