Review of The Foreigner (2017) by Stephen Y — 12 Oct 2017
It sure is good to have the legend back. The mere presence of Jackie Chan makes the Foreigner a tier above the rest of the action movies. However, it also means the Foreigner is held to a higher standard.
Overall, the Foreigner takes a much darker and more intense tone than typical Jackie Chan movies, and there are less jaw-dropping stunts, which is understandable considering Jackie Chan's age. Yes it is still a fun and extremely entertaining movie, but it just doesn't really feel like a Jackie Chan movie without the patent humor (other than Chan being referred to as "the Chinaman" throughout).
Sure Jackie Chan movies have never been known for flawless plots, but some of the plot holes here are so big it's almost impossible to ignore. The Foreigner is a good time. Just don't think too hard and don't expect a return to peak Jackie Chan.
