Review of The Longest Day (1962) by William R — 07 Dec 2009
Most modern audiences may not enjoy this movie. Compared to contemporary war/action flicks, it's very slow going and when it does get to the fighting it's very toned down - even by that era's standards.
Still, as a WWII enthusiast I very much enjoyed the backround story build-up to the beach landings and the almost episodic way the movie pans out; it is constantly jumping from one point-of-view to the next.
The cast is a veritable "Who's who" of '60's stars. This movie also gets extra points from me as it is one of the (sigh) few WWII movies where the Germans (or French, for that matter) are actually speaking their own language.
