Review of The Long, Hot Summer (1958) by Kevin M. W — 22 Jul 2011
A forgotten gem that pits Paul Newman alongside Orson Welles. Both of which are remarkable. Newman's method style vs Welles' classical style is captivating to behold. This was extremely steamy and sexy stuff for the 50s.
However, the real star here is Joanne Woodward who portrays a real woman in all her complexities. Apparently, Newman and her were falling deeply in love during the filming and it shows. Interesting subplot, Woodward's other man is probably gay.
This adds another layer to his role and performance. If you enjoyed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, I dare say this is even better.
