Review of The Long, Hot Summer (1958) by Thomas P — 18 Apr 2015
Tense, well crafted story that took several cues from Tennessee Williams, yet without the undertones of sexual innuendo - this sleeper hit was quickly overshadowed by the next Paul Newman vehicle adapted from Williams actual play, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, the source material for Long, Hot Summer.
The mythic controversy was that Williams and Newman both protested the downplay of said innuendos, but lost to director Kazans final say.
True or not, Newman fell in love w Joanne Woodward during their time together in Summer, tho they knew each other from acting classes previously, and Williams made several more successful plays that he would later adapt into film.
Many have pontificated about watching the relationship between Newman and Woodward bloom in this movie - see what you think.
Its a worthy effort, but might be too close in plot with Cat to try watching back to back - I imagine you won't appreciate whichever one you watch secondarily..
4 out of 5.
