Review of The Long Goodbye (1973) by Benjamin S — 06 Jun 2007
The movie has an atmosphere like no other: it's a detective story told in bright pastels, a constantly moving camera, and a mumbling, humorously existential protagonist. It's silly, yet, because of it's overall detached tone, it manages to be effectively dark and serious at times.
And the ending? He gets revenge, but not really; he is satisfied, but somehow this manages to be the only movie that makes revenge look neither evil nor sadistic.
