Review of The Long Goodbye (1973) by Ben W — 07 Mar 2008
Rather disappointing I must say. slow and mostly not as engaging as the films it "updates." altman is good but this is one of his less inspired attempts. gould wasnt the problem nor was a great performance from sterling hayden (though not near his performance from the killing).
I understand the premise and that its putting a fundamentally 40s and 50s character in the turmoil of the 70s but it really just didnt do all that much for me. I should read chandlers novel and im sure I would like it better.
there are just some 70s movies that are just....how to say this....too specific to the period. the ending is what makes the film passable. and whats the deal with the cover art here. that never happened.
he was never on the beach with a gun in his hand! im not even sure that the audience was aware he had a gun until the end. oh well.
