Review of The Long Goodbye (1973) by Carl H — 08 Mar 2012
I am a massive Raymond Chandler fan, he is one of my favourite authors and his books have changed my life. There are two great detectives in English fiction Sherlock Holmes and of course Philip Marlowe.
In this film Marlowe is convinced his old friend Terry Lennox is innocent and did not kill his wife and he has to sort out the usual mess before he ends up in jail or worse, in a box in the ground. This is the best and most accurate portrayal of Marlowe ever.
All he wants to do is live a quiet life and look after his cat. Elliott Gould is the definitive Marlowe and also Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his debut performance. A fantastic thriller that is far superior to Bogart's version of the Big Sleep, with great music and a fantastic cast, which shows the seedier side of Hollywood, they do not make films like this anymore.
