Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Priya K — 10 Sep 2007
The original British gangster flick. It doesn't rely on outrageous coincidences or twists.A classic 'whodunnit?!' story thats still grips after 25 yrs since its release. Helen Miren holds her own as a classy, intelligent yet vulnerable mistress of the east-end ganglord.
Witty script, zesty synth score with heavy sax solos (upbeat, overconfident, almost forcefully b-gradish.. classic 80s!).
But what really makes this film is the lead protagonist, Bob Hoskins. Fabulous performance.
And the jaw-dropping last scene alone is worth the watch, Hoskins conveying such a variety of emotions without uttering a single word.
Now, thats a class act.
If your haven't seen this, do yourself a favor.
