Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Sanah F — 18 Nov 2007
Blindingly good ganster movie starring Bob Hoskins and Derek Thompson (likely better known to most as Charlie from Casualty).
The film follows the exploits of uber gangster Harold Shand (Hoskins) as he attempts to broker a land ownership deal with the help of a local counciller and some oversees investors (in the shape of a mafia crime boss and his creepy lawyer).
The process is complicated by mystery bomb attacks on Shand's owned establishments, which drive him to increasingly desperate attempts to solve his problem and keep his investors from running away.
The plot twists and turns and the final revelation as to the nature of the attacks is masterful. If you thought all Bob Hoskins could do was slapstick comedy with cartoon bunnies, then watch this film!
