Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Julie F — 02 Feb 2009
Before getting to the content of the movie, the FEEL of the movie is glorious. One minute you are in "The French Connection" and the next you are in "Scarface." The film has that fabulous 70's grainy texture, with injections of 80's hair, clothes and metal palm trees.
Helen Mirren is perfect as Bob Hoskins "mol" and BH plays the thug turned business man with exceptional flair. As it was a 1979 flick, the IRA was a character in the mix, and Pierce Brosnan was downright yummy(in a pre - Remington Steel non-speaking part).
It is a scheme flick. A tried and true formula, but the success rests on Helen Mirren and Bob Hoskin's performances.
