Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Ceph J — 04 Sep 2011
On Good Friday, Harold's BFF is stabbed, restaurant blown up, and chauffer blown to pieces near his mom's church. What the hell is going on? It will be about an hour later that the audience learns but by that time, we should be hooked to "The Long Good Friday.".
Bob Hoskins is sensational as Harold and although the character is a meglamaniac, we understand his motivations and why this deal is so important to his respectability. The ending shot of Hoskins coming to realize his fate, is superb and a wonderful way to end the movie. All the actors are good including Helen Mirren as Victoria; the acting raises the movie into the realm of a docudrama. The plot is too complicated to figure out and nowhere is there mention of the London police which is odd considering the bombings. A very good movie about gangsters that demonstrates the paranoia.
