Colin Smith, played by Tom Courtenay, has to be my favourite cock o't north character from the so-called kitchen sink era.
He's sent to reform school for breaking into a bakery - only back home would a bakery make enough money to make it worth breaking into!
While trying to make a decent citizen of him, the house masters discover he has a serious talent for running and put him up for the long distance against the county posh kids. But not before he's proven himself to be reformed...
