Review of The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) by Bill M — 10 Jan 2009
While Rebecca is my favorite Hitchcock, I have to say that I like the older works as a whole more, mainly for the way in which he creates tension throughout the movies. The Lodger is an excellent example, and one scene in particular stands out (when the Lodger and Daisy are playing chess-a game of conquest-and the Lodger sits with arms wrapped about the table and tells her that he will get her).
The symbolism of the early Hitchcock films is poignant, and the black and white, silent film style seems only to enhance his intent. A wonderful tale.
