Review of The Limits of Control (2009) by Kyle C — 14 Jan 2010
Well this is definitely a Jarmusch film. Another movie about...nothing really. Or is it? Not traditionally engaging by any means, but the idea of the story is definitely intriguing and demands attention throughout the entire film. We are kept at arms length when it comes to the details of what exactly is happening here, so much so that it is frustrating and at times, offputting. What makes Jim's lastest foray not a complete failure is the compelling characters and locations that me meet along the way of this bleak journey. They are brought to life by the delicate yet paper-thin script and the always fantastic cinematography of Chris Doyle. Bottom line, I wanted more and never got it. Strangely, I still feel like Jarmusch was successful in telling a story his way; uncompromised, challenging, ultimately containing an aura of beautiful mystery...or misery.
**Bonus points for one of the most original behind the scenes docs I've ever seen. Very very cool and inspiring to a filmmaker.
