Review of The Lighthouse (2019) by Brunovn00 — 22 Jan 2020
This movie is an experience. The presentation is fantastic. I can't believe how this movie manages to be so haunting and scary. Everything from the sets to the sound to the lighting adds to the haunting presentation that is done right.
The aspect ratio is to add the feeling of loneliness and claustrophobia this movie wants to make the viewer feel and the black and white look isn't made because it looks cool but also, not only to make us feel that we are transported to sometime in the past but also makes some great contrasts that make this movie almost feel like in complete darkness.
The performances...Oh my God, this might be one of the best acted movies of 2019. The Green Goblin is great like in pretty much every role he takes. Thanks to the lighting and his jawdropping facial expressions he looked genuinely terrifying during the famous monologue scene.
Edward Cullen is the proof that (almost)any actor can be amazing if he's with the right director and I bought every action he made and every word he said. This movie is filled with so much creativity and while the story itself can be predictable because of the circumstances surrounding the characters there's so much to think about.
All the metaphors, the allegories, every element is there for a reason and it's up to the viewer to think. This is what makes or breaks this movie because you love it or hate it. This might be a weird movie for some (specially the masses who want more straight-forward, surface-level stories) but for me, it's a fantastic movie in which we learn a lot about the characters and all those plot elements that might feel confusing are done to add to the feeling of mystery surrounding the characters and the setting.
I feel that this movie is also a clever commentary about superstition and how we don't really know what's actually real or what not. This is a brilliant movie in every single aspect and even if you don't get the story or the point of the movie (I think I did) you have to live this experience.
It is NECESSARY to watch it in a theater or at home but with a good sound system and a big screen.
