Review of The Libertine (2004) by Stefano L — 25 Dec 2010
As plotless as the film was for the first half, The Libertine was overall an excellent story told in an overall poor fashion. The dreary, sullen, happiness drained cinematography would be called artistic and correct timewise by some, but frankly I found it to be a deteriment.
This movie was so dark in every aspect I found myself too often wandering off and not watching because the entire was painted in shades of gray and brown. The film was very clearly made by a young director aiming for the fences, but the dour and somber style in which The Libertine was filmed provided more detrimental uniformness than mood setting.
With a great performance from Depp and interesting story, The Libertine is a case in which the stylistic wants if the director impeded the story more than helping it in any way. Oh not to mention it was slightly sexual.
But fear bot, that was a minor plot element.
