Review of The Letter (1940) by Mark S — 06 Jan 2010
Bette Davis was always at her best when she was playing unsympathetic characters. Here she plays a cold and calculating woman who kills the man she's been having an affair with and tries to make her husband and the authorities believe she was merely defending herself in an unprovoked attack.
The direction from William Wyler is strong but I didn't really like the ending, which is a bit bizarre and feels too forced an attempt at mystique.
