Review of The Leopard (1963) by Gavin M — 26 Aug 2010
Beautiful Italian film set against the backdrop of political unrest during revolution. The characters are mostly aristocrats, but despite that there is a spark of personality and appeal not often found in aristocratic characters.
The Prince, played by an aging Burt Lancaster, is particularly great. The movie is a lot of conversation. Conversations of Lancaster trying to figure out life, his place in life, and the future of Sicily.
Despite a nearly 5 minute look at the revolution's battles, this isn't a movie of action. Instead it is a movie of pauses and internal speculation. Even as the screen lights up with flying colors and dancing people, there is a somber undercurrent as The Prince slowly paces.
