Review of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) by Theredsky — 17 Jun 2019
I enjoyed this movie. It’s not as good as the original but it’s still enjoyable. Here are the negatives. Most of the jokes in this film don’t work for me at all. They feel out of place and very cringe worthy.
Some of the songs can get annoying. I feel mixed about the idea of it turning into a semi musical but I don’t have a problem with most of the songs. The ones I do are just annoying and irritating. The human plot line was kind of dumb.
I wasn’t a huge fan of it and each scene with the human characters dragged me out of the film. This film is also kinda underwhelming. It starts to feel more like an add on than a sequel at points throughout the film which can feel underwhelming.
Here are the positives. Just as the first, it looks visually awesome. I love the animation style used with these films. It’s also incredibly meta which works very well for this film. Chris Pratt plays two characters in this film.
He plays Emmet and a character named Rex who is basically a mish mash of all of Chris Pratt’s biggest roles (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, and Magnificent Seven). The film is paced really well.
It’s fast paced and moves quickly in order to get from scene to scene. The cast does a great job as in the first film. I love Chris Pratt’s and Elizabeth Banks’ Chemistry with each other. It worked great in the first film and it works great in the second film.
I do like the new characters added to this film. Rex is a great character and it’s genuinely surprising when he turns out to be Emmet from a different timeline. I also like Tiffany Haddish as Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi.
There is also a lot of heart to this film. It’s emotional in certain points and makes you feel for the characters. Most of the songs in this film are pretty good. The Everything is Awesome remix is nice to hear and the Not Evil song is nice.
I do like how the movie plays up as Wa-Nabi is a bad guy but in reality it’s Rex. It’s played off nicely. The tone for this film does remain consistent all the way through. Overall, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part may not be as good as the original but it stills provides a great voice cast and great visuals.
I give The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part a 7.5/10.
