Review of The Legend of Tarzan (2016) by Cameron A — 03 Nov 2018
There are plenty of generic films out there that are still fun despite the lack of originality present. The Legend of Tarzan is not one of them. The beginning of the film drags badly with nothing but dull exposition. We get to see Tarzan nuzzling a lioness and saying hello to his old tribal friends and that is about as exciting as the first half gets. The second half does pick up a bit with some half decent action sequences but it still suffers from a bland story of hero rescuing the damsel in distress coupled with uninspired writing. As well as poor writing, the CGI is also awful, completely breaking any immersion.
It's also sad to see a good cast go to waste. Skaarsgard and Robbie are completely miscast and don't suit the roles of Tarzan and Jane respectively. Waltz and Hounsou are wasted and don't have enough screen time to make interesting antagonists. And whilst Samuel L. Jackson does provide the films only moments of comedy, it feels like the only reason he's there is to add another big name to the cast as his character adds nothing to the film.
