Review of The Legend of Tarzan (2016) by Movie M — 29 Nov 2016
What caught my interest before watching "The Legend Of Tarzan" was the fact that it wasn't just a lazy remake of the classic Disney "Tarzan" movie, it actually acted as a sort of sequel to the original, and took on its own plot.
Although I could have done with a little more correlation to the classic Tarzan story, the new plot definitely had its upside, but also a very, very harsh downside. This movie is set in the late 1800's, so a lot of this movie has to deal with the Civil War, and slavery in Congo, which is where it loses me.
It advertises the movie as a "Tarzan" film, but it loses a LOT of the Tarzan vibes with all the other events it tries to bring in, and for a lot of it makes the movie feel more like a Civil War movie rather than a Tarzan movie.
However, the scenes where Tarzan does come out are extremely entertaining, and I found myself engaged in the movie again. The scenes in the jungle, with the gorillas and other animals, are the ones that I came for, and are unfortunately among some of the only good scenes in the movie.
As for the acting, Margot Robbie (Jane Clayton) was in it almost as much as Alexander Skarsgard (John Clayton/Tarzan) was, but both did a very satisfying job. Samuel L. Jackson (George Washington Williams) was also in this movie, and while I don't think it was his strongest performance in recent movies, he still had some good looks in it.
All in all, "The Legend Of Tarzan" has some scenes that are extremely engaging, entertaining, and are exactly what you hope for in the Tarzan "remake", however it tries to add some of its own flavour that ultimately bring it down, and will completely lose the interest of many people.
"The Legend Of Tarzan" is worth watching if you're bored.
