Review of The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2005) by Sol H — 22 May 2010
Not to be confused with that crap-fest known as "The League of Extra-Ordinary Gentlemen".
This is a movie based on a sketch show, and what's amazing is it actually works very, very well. Sketch-show based movies rarely work well, but this one really does. As the show was all set in the fictional town of Royston Vasey as we followed interlinking sketches featuring the inhabitants, the movie too follows pretty much all the characters.
Seeing as the show's creators and making any more episodes of the TV show, the fictional town is facing an apocalypse and three of the not-so-well-known characters travel to the real world to convince their creators to write more. It's a very high-concept film, but as I said before, it works really well.
Unfortunately, the film isn't at all dark, whereas the show was notorious for being a pitch-black comedy, but who cares? It's a bit of a missed opurtunity, but the film's still great.
Personal Enjoyment: :fresh: 8/10.
As a film: :fresh: 7/10.
