Review of The Last Winter (2006) by Private U — 13 Apr 2009
An interesting concept of a film, with an unusual (and refreshing) slow start to a thriller movie, rather than the usual "Slash and kill" teenager flick. Set in north Alaska, the film follows a team in search of oil under the ice, when members of the team begin to die.
.. Good characterisation and a good suspense is built in the film, using the sense of isolation, lack of music, and frequent amazing shots of the white winter tundra (making for some great scene changes).
The film is let down by the short run time, and by the attempted to shoe-horn in an ending about the evils of global warming, and CGI monsters replacing a sense of unknown.
