Review of The Last Unicorn (1982) by Caroline E — 18 Aug 2008
I expected this to be pretty hokey, like Rankin/Bass' "The Hobbit" or "Frosty the Snowman". But what I saw was a pure wonderous fantasy that really struck a chord in me. Though the animation was typical Rankin/Bass, the voice work was just perfect.
I picked up on young Alan Arkin immediately. Jeff Bridges still sounds the same almost 30 years prior. Then there's Christopher Lee and Brother Theodore. I had heard great things about this from fans, but I just assumed folks liked it because they grew up with it.
And although the animation doesn't quite hold up, everything else about it does. The only odd part is the main villian being an energy drink. They ought to update their slogan from "Redbull gives you wings" to "Redbull steals your unicorns".
