Review of The Last Unicorn (1982) by Melissa C — 28 Jan 2014
A rare true classic. I decided to watch it again, as I have many times over the years since childhood, to be sure it still held up. Indeed, the wonder with such sad tinges of adultness (the only word that seems to fit) remains a fulfilling adventure.
Brilliant voice acting (though I'm still a little underwhelmed by how they audio treated Mia Farrow's inner monologue voice). Voice acting that reminds me: animated features can have all the verisimilitude of real life in their characters.
A simple butterfly that goes from silly to serious suddenly demands your attention. An old man battling between hubris and greed. The knight without a quest. A wizard without... a spell. Molly Grue, a woman who tells you with her brilliantly performed, direct words, that sorrow and rage and love are not mutually exclusive things.
The cat... that damn cat. Love that cat.
