Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Julian W — 13 Jan 2008
Not to be confused with mad mel gibson's recent fundamentalist slasher film with a similar name!
This is a masterpiece. based on a novel in which jesus is cast as an ordinary man, this one had the faithful protesting in the streets when it was released, because it explores a dreamy sequence in the last 30 minutes in which christ doesn't die on the cross but has a wife and child...
Puts the story in it's proper place, as a piece of psychologically meaningful mythology.
My favorite scene is the brooklyn-esque argument between willem defoe's jesus and harvey keitel's judas - "wassa madda wid you, huh?".
Peter gabriel spent five years creating the score after the movie was already in the can - and produced what I think is the best musical recording ever made.
The music from this film created a revolution both in world music and it's mainstream recognition and in movie soundtracks. check out the soundtrack for dead man walking as an example....
