Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Domenica C — 17 Jul 2008
It has always been difficult for me to understand the allure of religion, Christianity specifically. It wasn't pushed on me too much when I was young, but it was still present and I never quite "got it." I still don't. The whole notion of "sin" doesn't make sense to me. It has no relevance to my life. I never read the bible, although I tried to when I was young. The few times I went to church, I attentively tried to pay attention and glean something worthwhile from the experience, because I knew it was important to many people and I wanted to understand.
That said, this movie almost made me understand why it is so appealing. I liked Jesus best when he was preaching about love and stopping hateful people from stoning a prostitute to death. The appeal of waging a war with an axe and all the stuff about sin lost me though. It all seems very foreign to me and I can't quite get it, I'm afraid.
The movie is gorgeous and completely engrossing, even at near three hours. The Peter Gabriel soundtrack can be kinda cheesy at times, though. I need to see more Scorsese movies!
