Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Garrett R — 22 Aug 2010
Scorsese had struggled for years to see his vision arrive on the big screen and when it did the last 40mins of the film caused a great deal of outrage over its depiction of Jesus as a Normal man.
Now some 20 years after the fact we can see the film for what it is another great film from Americas greatest living director.
Once you get round the cast speaking with American accents and some clunky dialogue the rewards are many most notably an immese central performance from Willem Dafoe as Jesus.
Yes all the beard and sandals stuff is here but Scorsese has seen plenty of Michael Powell,Pasolini,Rosselini,Kubrick and Anthony Mann to give the film a beautiful visual sheen.
Michael Ballhaus and regular Scorsese editor Thelma Schoonmaker give the film is bold and daring moments and Peter Gabriel uses plenty of world music on the stunning soundtrack.
Yes the film is contriversial but thats part of its greatness and the film is miles better than Mel Gibsons Passion guff.
A rare thing of beautyfrom one of out greatest film directors.
