Review of The Last Station (2009) by Patrick C — 27 Feb 2010
Interesting, despite some of the obvious weaknesses. Themes resonate - intellectual property rights, life and love in the public domain, obligation of those that have much, to the many that do not. Less then stellar: Giamatti, Condron and Mirron are all terribly one dimentional, and the Valentin/Masha love story is totally uninspired.
However, McAvoy's thoughtful appreciation of the Countess, despite his opposing political/philosophical views and his expressive admiration for Tolstoy is really well done. Plummer is indeed the star, delivering a nuanced portrayal of a passionate man, with a genuine interest in everyone he meets.
