Review of The Last Station (2009) by Matthew P — 04 Mar 2010
Some of the critics, the snooty ones, weren't impressed with this German dramatization of the last days of Leo Tolstoy, but I sure was. it gave me a rare glimpse into the life of this Russian literary genius whose late-life pacifism influenced Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Cesar Chavez.
Christopher Plummer & Helen Mirren masterly played Count & Countess Tolstoy with wonderful lusty vigor, an aging lion & lioness battling & lobing fiercely nearly every day of their lives, with increasing intensity near the end of his, over his desire to will his literary works to the Russian people instead of to their family.
I left the theater feeling completely satisfied with what I'd just witnessed. 4 stars.
