Review of The Last Station (2009) by Ban-Foo L — 04 Apr 2010
An excellent and intense drama about the complicated relationship between Russiaâ??s greatest novelist, Leo Tolstoy and his wife, Sofya just before his death in 1910. With some absolutely sublime acting from Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren and the ever-youthful James McAvoy! The movie chronicles Tolstoyâ??s struggle, in his final days, to remain committed to his philosophy of a life devoid of material wealth.
The devious manner in which Tolstoyâ??s friend and secretary, Chertkov gets him to bequeath his works to the Russian people, against the express wishes of Sofya, demonstrates how easily the pursuit of a higher ideal can so easily become perversely selfish.
