Review of The Last Station (2009) by Melodye R — 18 Jun 2010
A movie based on a play about a little known chapter in the life of the much beloved Russian author Leo Tolstoy. A epic and operatic power struggle ensues between his wife (Mirren) and members of his devoted Tolstoy-an society for the legacy of his works.
Some of the performances seem somewhat over the top and overtly histrionic at times. The plot drifts from the long passionate relationship of Tolstoy and his wife to a rather passionless melodrama about the loss of the copyright of his works.
The subplot of the first romance of Valetin (James McAvoy) proves to be quite distracting as well. The author is gradually sidelined in his own film.
