Review of The Last Movie Star (2018) by Mharlyn M — 01 Jul 2018
Although I like Burt Reynolds and consider myself a fan I was reluctant to watch this movie because I thought it was going to be another cutesy geezer gone wild movie but boy was I pleasantly surprised.
This movie is an unsentimental examination of fame and aging in a youth obsessed America and it's funny to boot. The same kind of funny that was always so charming about Burt Reynolds himself: tongue in cheek and a little self-deprecating.
It is also an unflinching look at Burt Reynolds career and the man behind the career. What could have been just a mediocre gag-ridden movie with empty stabs at humor is a quirky melancholy gem that sparkles just like the twinkle still left in Burt's eyes.
The supporting cast is excellent and Adam Rifkin's script and directing are first rate and dead on the money. Burt's performance shows he still has Oscar worthy chops. I'm just sorry this did not do well at the box-office because this is worthy of a wider audience than it had when it was first released.
