Review of The Last Legion (2007) by Patrik J — 31 Jul 2010
I thought this would be a goofy B movie when I saw it at Blockbuster, but I was very impressed. Excellent acting, directing, and writing. Aishwarya is excellent as a tough woman with a heart. She could sure kick some serious butt.
Plus she looked natural swordfighting instead of a pretty girl faking it. The soldiers were funny as well. Little Ceaser got a little annoying. Too much of him at times. His portrayal was not very consistent.
Sangster seemed confused half the time. The swordfights were well choreographed as well. I liked how this movie was not gory or full of swear words or full of nudity. It doesn't need that crap to show honest charaters battling through dire situations.
The special effects were not great. They were obvious at times. But overall, I felt the story was well made and developed. The settings were fantastic. I loved in the beginning when you'd see a fallen piece of a statue littering the landscape (like with Aurelius slees under a piece of a giant statue's hand).
All the environments throughout the film were perfect to set the tone and time period. I enjoyed the twist of the end of the Roman Empire twisting into the Arthuran legend. After all, Ecalibur was shrowded in mystery.
Very enjoyable film for those looking more at the mythos and characters than the special effects.
