Review of The Last Legion (2007) by Vittal B — 05 Oct 2008
Yet another Arthurian movie...great! I was a little confused, though. It was very Arthurian, the whole movie, and I figured Romulus was the origin of the Arthur legend. He find Excaliburnus, He vanquishes the evil ruler of Britania, is named Pendragon, and rules in peace.
But no, his SON is Arthur. I'm confused as to the intent here. But whatever. I enjoyed the movie, up to where it changed from what I expected. There's the requisite Veteran Warrior (sometimes Arthur, sometimes not), here played well by Colin Firth.
There's the kick-ass female warrior, played here with more action sequences (and more clothes) than Kiera Knightley in King Arthur by Aishwarya Rai. There's the mystic/sorceror/teacher, played here in an all-to-much-like-Gandalf fashion by Ben Kingsley.
It was a good performance, but he looked EXACTLY like Gandalf--not his fault, but the costume designers. On the downside, some elements just seemed counter-intuitive. Why does Romulus run out behind the enemy lines? Why does Ambrosinus head to the temple-thing at the final battle? The whole end of the movie was a letdown for me, but I still enjoyed the film.
