Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Sofia Å — 18 Aug 2009
I saw this on TV the other night...from the edited version I saw, this movie definitely deserved the awards and nominations it received back a few years ago. Some of the dialogue is difficult to understand, but the story itself is moving. Forest Whitaker's portrayal of the Ugandan dictator was astounding. Powerhouse performance. And I liked seeing James McAvoy in a more serious role (having seen him with goat legs, with a girl with a pig nose, and alongside a gun-toting Angelina Jolie...don't get me wrong--I LOVE, ABSOLUTELY ADORE James McAvoy, but this movie proved his acting worth).
I might be getting squeemish in my old age, but this movie was borderline violent/gory for me, and remember I saw the TV version. But the story was captivating. The imdb tagline says "Charming. Magnetic. Murderous." I think that perfectly sums it up. This movie was very good. Someday I might watch the unedited version. But I'll still have to have the captions on. :-P.
