Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Jose P — 28 Aug 2009
That this true story feels so unoriginal is one of the most depressing thoughts I've had in months. The movie plays out exactly as you'd expect from trailers: dude gets power, seems likable, things start seeming awry, dude winds up killing 300,000 people.
Whitaker deserves all the credit he's been given for the role and McAvoy is competent enough, though I got really tired of the "I'm intense and conflicted" face, which is basically what he does for the entire second half of the film.
A phenomenal soundtrack is married to energetic (though sometimes too energetic) editing to give the whole thing a nice modern, high-budget feel. Depressing as hell, but I guess that's exactly the reason that the movie is required watching.
