Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Phil S — 09 Feb 2015
Great movie. Cleverly weaving a fictional story into true events. James McAvoy's fictional doctor (clever use of a Scotsman since Amin really did declare himself King of Scotland) gives us a window into the childlike brutal madness of Idi Amin, and the true course of his and his countries decent into chaos.
A solid performance as the cheeky everyman who ends up in it up to his neck. However the film is dominated by an absolutely fantastic performance from Forrest Whitaker, possibly his best, and he doesn't even look like him! Starts quite light and breezy but does get pretty brutal at times and there is a satisfyingly gripping final act.
Good stuff.
