Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Wan Amin Y — 04 Aug 2008
I remember watching this film as a kid in Australia and was really mesmerized by the beauty of the whole film. Some scenes in the film aren't really appropriate for a child's eyes but I believe it is because films such as The Last Emperor that sparked my interest in cinema years on.
As I grew older I finally understand the complexity of the characters particularly Puyi, the powerless Emperor. The music is timeless and I really fits in well with the film. The cinematography is breathtaking and if you watch the movie now you would definitely believe that the film was made some time round the millennium.
The casting is superb in this John Lone plays the adult character of Puyi superbly, somebody who wants to break free from everything he has been raised to believe but is also afraid of losing it. Peter O' Toole does a great job as Puyi's tutor possibly the only person who actually cared about him.
Joan Chen to me was the best of the lot and that is just a personal opinion. Overall 10/10.
