Review of The Lady Eve (1941) by Darryl J — 28 Oct 2008
After the bad taste that Sullivan's Travels left in my mouth,I was extremely surprised at how much I loved this. I was swept up from the beginning. Henry Fonda is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors.
I've seen 5 of his films and every single performance has impressed me to no end. I don't know what it is but there is something about him that makes him charming and likable beyond belief. He's not the only standout in this film, though.
Barbra Stanwyck is also electrifying and undeniably sexy as a con who can't quite finish her job due to a crazy little thing called love. Both performances are wonderful but Fonda brings a sort of depth to this screwball comedy-romance.
He grounds his character in reality. He's so taken with Stanwycks's character. He really nails the shy and awkwardness of a man smitten to no end. That's what I liked the best. The script and direction are both great.
There are some truly hilarious scenes and one supremely sexy scene(you know which one I'm talking about if you've seen this) but it's the perfect performances that makes this a true classic.
