Review of The Lady Eve (1941) by Kaity J — 30 Nov 2008
It's interesting which movie stars, directors and movies stay in the public conciousness and which ones are dim memories. Preston Sturges, Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. Of the three I bet only Fonda stands out and mostly because of his last name being the same as his famous daughter Jane.
The Lady Eve directed by Sturges and starring Stanwyck and Fonda is probably one of the greatest screwball comedies ever made. And certainly one of the sexiest. Grifters take an Ale fortune heir for a ride is certainly the high concept for the movie, but oh what grifters and oh what an heir.
The movie moves so fast you lose a great line because you're still laughing from the last one you actually did hear. Barbara Stanwyck shows just why she was one of the biggest stars working in pictures with the classic one two punch of The Lady Eve and Ball of Fire, both from 1941.
Tough, smart, sexy. Henry Fonda holds his own as the hapless rich boy who's been up the Amazon and hasn't seen anything remotely like her in a year. The supporting players are all Sturges vets and shine in roles tailor made for their talents.
This movie begs to been seen by a wider audience because they certainly could make them like this, but they don't. Highly recommended.
