Review of The Lady Eve (1941) by Jack W — 16 Dec 2008
Everyone raves about Sullivan's Travels (if they even know who Preston Sturges is, or just learned about it from a trivia card helping seven-year-olds everywhere know where the Coen Brothers get their wacky ideas!) but when it comes to Sturges' 1941 career, this is the place to go.
Stanwyck is ravishing and fiercely clever, Fonda is worth Fonda-ling, if you're into that, and slapstick has rarely been more justified. Screwball comedy is an underrated art form, and Preston Sturges is most definitely its master.
