Review of The Lady Eve (1941) by Ken T — 07 Nov 2010
My pick as the very best Preston Sturges film. This is the greatest romantic comedy ever made and the benchmark for how all others must be judged - it is almost unfair! Fonda plays a rather meek and wealthy man with a nerdy interest in snakes.
He has just boarded a cruiseliner and meets up with beautiful con artist Stanwyck and her father played by the marvelous Coburn. At first the goal is to get his money, but love intervenes. Then, Fonda becomes wise to who exactly these two are and breaks things off.
Well, this leads to a second section that is just as incredibly bizarre. A riot start to finish with Stanwyck, Coburn and Fonda all outstanding and William Demearest adding some great lines as the bodyguard of Fonda.
A cinematic gem with so many great scenes and lines!
