Review of The Lady Eve (1941) by Bernard A — 12 Jun 2009
I didn't think this one was as uproariously funny as my favorite Sturges flick (The Miracle of Morgan's Creek) the first time I saw it...but upon rewatches - I realise what a truly wonderful movie this is.
..and not unlike Miracle of Morgan's Creek - The Lady Eve has really grown on me. I always seem to see things I never noticed before in this dialogue-rich romantic screwball. You scratch your head wondering how particular lines ever got past the censors! Barbara Stanwyck just owns this picture.
I think Stanwyck has never looked more sexier than she does here as part of a father/daughter con artist team who has their sights set on the nerdy heir to an ale fortune (Henry Fonda). Complications arise when she finds herself falling in love with the heel! Memorable scenes await you if you haven't seen this yet.
Truly a classic.
