Review of The Kite Runner (2007) by Suraj N — 19 Sep 2009
I haven't read the book, but still got a chance to watch this movie. The movie starts with 2 friends Amir and Hassan's life in their childhood days at Afghanistan. The good thing to notice is that Kabul used to be a city of normalcy, where things were in place, there was a freedom of choice like to hang around, watch a movie, social gathering, parties so on. It just makes us think the current state of Kabul after watching the first half and feel pity.
The first half is interesting showing the cowardly attributes of Amir and also imaging the huge rage in Afghanis during those days i.e. Kite festival.
The second half deals with the present life of Amir in US. This is where the story telling looks loosely held wherein I was getting distracted with the plot. Also the secrets held up by Amir's dad is not narrated visually thus leaving no impact on the viewer's mind.
It's a mediocre attempt as I felt that the filmmaker got the plot confused between commercial and artistic aspects.
Watch this one for Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada who played 'Hassan', was simply awesome with his silent expressions!
Cheers,.
