Review of The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (2013) by Brandon W — 30 Jul 2016
The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness is directed by Mami Sunada, and it's about how it's been going in Studio Ghibli, the animation company for films like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and many others, and how the production is like with The Wind Rises, Hayao Miyazaki's last film, and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.
When I was watching Chris Stuckmann's review of My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, he was talking at the end about this movie which I'm just like, you know what? Screw it, I'll watch it, and when I watched it, I really enjoyed it better than the other documentary.
It was very investing, and when it does get depressing, it doesn't go too depressing and shows the positive aspects of working in Studio Ghibli. Hearing Hayao Miyazaki talk about anything, is really interesting as he have been working for more than 20 years and now decide to retire.
It's fascinating to see how they made the animation as I didn't realize how difficult it is to get it perfectly right, especially when it's on time. The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness is an amazing documentary that I am sad to see Hayao Miyazaki retire, but it is understandably so why he wanted to do it, and he did leave off with a bang that is The Wind Rises.
