Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Hunter D — 05 Sep 2008
This movie was almost like a companion piece to Taxi Driver, Rupert Pupkin feels like the sunny side of Travis Bickle, still dark and twisted, but in a way that makes you laugh. I had a blast watching this movie, Jerry Lewis was great in his role, I'm fascinated with that man's face, it's very expressive but not overly so, at least in this film.
Robert De Niro really sold the role, it just made me even more depressed over the quality of the films he's in now. I did notice how reigned in Scorsese's style was, it almost felt like television from the area in place (not the ACTUAL television scenes) but the movie in general.
It also has one of my new favorite endings in a movie ever.
