Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Mehmet A — 30 Aug 2007
Bookie reminds me of wenders' brilliant adaptation of highsmith's "ripley's game", "the american friend", in that the main character is forced to commit a murder to save his arse from the mob.
what is more is that both films are shot in 1976 so I wouldn't expect a direct influence of one on the other. just two brilliant stories of slowly deteriorating characters, made at a time when crime and suspense meant more than just supposedly cool simplification and in-your-face violence.
